Before I left Chula Vista, Wendy and I used to take our lunch break together at a salad bar in the mall.

“No man has the right to hit a woman,” Wendy had said at lunch more than once.

“But I’m afraid he’ll leave me,” I told her. “He’s all I have. After my mom died, I had nobody and I felt so lucky to find Joel.”

“I know, but still, that’s no reason to stay with a man who hits.”

Easy for you to say, I thought. You’ve got a good man. You’ve got parents. “I wouldn’t know where to go if I left. I’d have nobody.” Wendy didn’t understand how it was for me. I wasn’t strong like her.

Looking back now, I knew Wendy was right. I felt ashamed of being such a coward then. Since leaving Chula Vista, I’d learned that I could do anything I put my mind to.
